Benijofar

Benijófar ! This small village borders to Rojales and with its 4.4 km2 is immediately also one of the smallest villages in the region. Its name in Arabic, yauhar, means 'son of a pearl' and refers possibly to the Arab family name Yauhar or to an orographical relief in the form of a pearl. The destiny of this village has been linked irrevocable to the river Segura to which is not only its wealth to blame, but adversity also its missery. The flood in 1957, destroyed the village and killed its inhabitants. Today water in the river is controlled and has become an important tool for Benijofar. The main activity of this village is agriculture and the emphasis lies on growing vegetables and fruit which the markets in all cities and villages of the province Alicante supply daily.
